Assessment preparation

The objective of this unit is to provide students with effective strategies to maximise their preparedness for assessments and examinations, including advance preparation, assessment and examination techniques and practical tips. It also includes a printable checklist that students can use to prepare for each assessment.

The unit begins with a reminder of skills and advice covered in other units in this series. It encourages the learner to think of assessment preparation as part of a long-term process that begins with regular attendance of classes, active listening and participation in lessons, and completion of assignments.

The activities contain techniques for managing learning and practical preparation for exams such as having the right equipment and knowing where and when the exams are taking place. It also includes advice for taking proper rest and keeping calm.

The final part of this unit suggests ways to approach assessment papers by studying from past papers, reading the rubric, and checking timing.

This is mainly a summary of advice that the students will have received frequently. However, it is useful as a rounding-up of key points on exam preparation, and can be used in conjunction with other units such as 'Learn from lessons', 'Revision' and 'Time management'.

Extension

  • Start a dialogue with students about assessment preparation well before this becomes an issue. Encourage active participation in lessons and regularly remind students to take notes.
  • Check notes on a regular basis, and remind students of the need to keep the notes organised and up-to-date.
  • Several weeks before an exam, raise the issue of revision and print copies of a blank revision timetable and a blank checklist for students to fill in.
